History of massage cupping therapy

The cup massage was passed down from one generation to the next from ancient china to the present day world. The first cups for massages were made from animal horns that had been hollowed out. In the early years, animal horn cups were used in treatment of snake bites to help remove the toxins and in the treatment of skin lesions. Ancient Egyptian text documents the use of cup massage.

Back during the 18th century up through the beginning of the 20th century, it was prevalent in most homes and frequently used for colds, congestion and coughs. Cup massage was practiced by doctors in America at the end of the 18th century.

What is massage cupping?

Massage cupping is basically a reversed massage; traditional massage pushes inward while the suction cups lift the skin and underlying tissues outward from the body.

It is a method of providing stimulation by application of cups to the skin. A vacuum is created enhancing blood flow and relaxing tight muscles. The therapy reduces back pain and body stiffness. Suction cup massage may be followed with an application of essential oils, liniments, or analgesics.

Suction cups are placed on the body usually to the back to provide manipulation. Application of lubricant topically before placing the cups can assist with obtaining a tight seal and ease in gliding the cups during treatment. The ancient method used heat to extract the air from the cup but modernized cups allow for mechanical extraction with a hand pump. Cupping is usually applied on nodal sites but non nodal regions can be used also.

How does cupping therapy work?

The suction creates negative pressure draining excessive fluids along with toxins from the tissues. It also provides stimulation to the peripheral nervous system bringing increased blood circulation providing oxygenation to skin and muscles that have been stagnant. Adhesions are loosened and knots in the soft tissues smoothed away

How does it feel?

A suction cup massage will take about 20 minutes including suction time of around 5 minutes and relaxation time of about 15 minutes. The therapy produces a feeling of warmth on the body. If pain or discomfort is felt the session should be ended. The skin will probably turn red indicating the increased circulation on the surface of the skin.

Benefits of cupping therapy

繚 Tight muscles are loosened
繚 Complete body relaxation
繚 Chronic pain is diminished
繚 Blood pressure is lowered
繚 Skin Tone is enhanced
繚 Promotes restful and peaceful sleep
繚 Concentration is improved
繚 Immune system is strengthened
繚 Improves range of motion
繚 Improves flexibility
繚 Relieves tiredness
繚 Relieves muscle aches
繚 Reduces cellulite
繚 Removes neck tension

Suction cup massage has unlimited possibilities with other modalities for overall health and pain management. The equipment is economical and easy for practitioners to maintain for patient therapy.

Venturing out on your own with a new massage business, or hoping to breathe new life into your established massage business? Whether you have a faithful client base or are still waiting for your first client, these tips will help you form a solid massage marketing plan for your business.

Of all the massage marketing ideas you may hear about, word of mouth is by far a massage therapist's strongest asset. Clients who have personally benefited from your healing touch are a natural advocate for your massage therapy practice.

People tend to accept opinions based on personal experience, particularly when those opinions are offered freely, with no underlying motives. Personal referrals from friends or family members-or even casual acquaintances-are more likely to generate a response than traditional advertising venues such as newspaper ads or flyers.

Loyal clients raving about your massage skills to their friends and family, resulting in an endless chain of referrals and new clients, is an inspiring vision, but in the meantime, what can you do to light the spark?

One way to spark referrals is to offer a special deal for clients who refer your massage services to a friend or family member. How does this work? Here's an example. If a new client books (and keeps) an appointment as the result of a referral, the client who made the referral receives a free massage session. If the new client rebooks at the end of their first appointment, your regular client gets another incentive, such as hot stone massage.

Other rewards for referrals could include free add-on treatments such as foot massage, spa treatments, or aromatherapy. These add-ons encourage the client to sample other services you have to offer. If they enjoy it, they may even consider adding it to their regular massage sessions.

Another source of potential referrals is community involvement. Network with community members and local business owners, especially those who work with clients and customers that would benefit from therapeutic massage. Individuals who are prominent in the community can effectively market your business through word of mouth.

Chiropractors, fitness trainers, and physical therapists are key individuals to include in your network, but don't limit yourself to the obvious. Be creative. Include health food stores, specialty gift shops, bridal shops, and counseling centers. Focus on the type of clients you hope to attract. Do you specialize in pregnancy massage? Network with family planning centers and local health clinics. Sports massage? Partner with local gyms, yoga centers, and sports chiropractors. Massage for the elderly? Connect with home health care workers, senior centers, and nursing homes.

On the flip side, word of mouth can also work against you if your massage practice offers less than clients expect. The foundation of any massage business plan must include a professional atmosphere and relaxing environment. If you try to scrape by with threadbare sheets and oil-dotted walls or neglect to clean the restrooms, your clients will notice and tell their friends. Clients are more likely to become regulars if they perceive that you care about their health, their time, and their comfort.

While word of mouth is your core strategy for long-term clients, there are plenty of other massage marketing ideas that can give your appointment schedule a boost. Chair massage is one of the most effective. It's also an excellent introduction to massage therapy for potential clients. Chair massage allows clients to sample the power of healing touch before experimenting with the deeper benefits of full body massage.

Offer chair massage sessions at community and social events, health fairs, business expos, farmers markets, athletic events, country clubs, coffee houses, bookstores, or universities. Bring your appointment book to schedule office sessions on the spot for interested clients.

Some therapists offer chair massage for free as a marketing promotion, but clients looking for a handout are less likely to become regular clients. Most massage therapists charge one dollar per minute for seated massage. Individuals who are willing to pay for seated massage will be more willing to invest in your services for full body massage.

Business cards should also be an important part of your massage therapy business plan. Give extra business cards to friends and family members who are willing to refer your services. Keep a stack of business cards at the appointment desk, where clients can pick up a few on their way out if they know of people who may be interested in your services. Don't hesitate to pass out business cards on your own as well.

Building up your massage business takes planning and hard work, but the results are worth the effort. Your business and your clients will benefit from your efforts to reach individuals who can find hope and healing through massage therapy.

One of the challenges of educating students with autism spectrum disorders is accommodating their sensory needs. Balancing too little vs. too much input is sometimes beyond educators who do not have the experience of teaching children with autism. The need for this kind of specialized experience is why many parents prefer their children attend a specialized autism school in New York rather than public school.

Too Much Input

Children with autism can be overwhelmed by sensory input. They might be mesmerized by brightly colored objects, run from a room when it gets to loud, or refuse to eat foods with certain textures. An autism school classroom is set up to minimize the amount of extraneous inputs that will distract students.

Carpet and soft furniture absorb excess noise. If a loud noise is coming, teachers warn the students so they are not startled. Classrooms have fewer bright posters and use shades on the windows to regulate the amount of light. Quiet areas allow students to get away from things when they start to become overwhelmed. Teachers wear less perfume or cologne. These steps allow students to focus on the sensory input that is important without having to filter out irrelevant information.

Too Little Input

At the other end of the spectrum, students with autism may have muted senses so crave strong inputs. They may lick toys, particularly anything with a strong taste such as modeling clay. They constantly touch or even bite themselves. Fidgety students crave the inputs that come from movement.

Autism schools have a variety of strategies to provide inputs in a safe manner that won't interfere with other activities. Weighted vests or textured chairs help students who need strong tactile inputs. Rocking chairs allow a student to move while still paying attention to class. Brightly colored tape helps a student locate the boundaries of a desk or the carpet used for circle time. Through all of this, a structured schedule helps the child with autism function smoothly.

Finding Equilibrium

Balancing the needs of an individual student with the needs of the class is a critical element in creating a plan for educating an autistic child. If Child A needs strong auditory input but Child B is oversensitive to sound, the needs of both children must be met. A solution in this case could be to let Child A use an FM system and headphones so the teacher's voice is louder, being careful of course the student does not turn the volume so high it endangers hearing, while not interfering with Child B.

Accommodation of opposing needs one reason an autism school in New York is better suited for ASD students then public school. These institutions already know strategies that have worked in the past and don't have to experiment to find the right solution.

Massage therapy is a practice of manipulating muscles and other tissues of the body which results in functional, physical and sometimes psychological goals and purposes. This type of therapy can be dated back thousand of years. It is sometimes a part of conventional treatments and in some instances involved in complementary and alternative medicine.

Many people use massage therapy for numerous health-related purposes. For instance a hot stone therapy utilizes heated stones to relieve muscle tension. Massage therapy involves the client being treated while lying on a massage table or sitting on a chair. He may either be partially or fully unclothed. There appear to be only a few risks to this kind of therapy if it is properly used by a trained professional. It is a diverse field and offers different types of massage. To help you figure out what kind is right for you, here is a guideline on the most popular types of massage therapy.

1. Aromatherapy massage
This is the art and science of using essential oils in enhancing the body, mind and spirit's overall well-being. It draws on the healing power of the plant world which contains medicinal and aromatic characteristics. The essential oils used are chemically complex and have their own distinct therapeutic qualities. It involves the use of slow, gentle, and rhythmic movements. It helps the muscles melt into deep relaxation.

2. The Swedish massage therapy
This is the most common type of massage practiced in the US. It is typically used for relaxation, stress relief and to ease muscle tension. Long smooth strokes and kneading are used by a massage therapist on the superficial layers of muscle.

3. Deep Tissue Massage
This massage targets the deeper layers of the connective tissues and muscle. Slower strokes or friction techniques are used by the massage therapist to relieve tension in chronically tight or painful muscles.

4. Reflexology
Foot reflexology is a non-invasive method to bring balance to the body. Although this is called foot massage, it is more than that. It involves the application of a specific type of pressure on particular areas of the feet which corresponds to the different parts of the body.

5. Stone massage
This is an ancient healing process. This involves placing a smooth, hot stone on certain points of the body to loosen or warm muscles and balance energy centers inside the body.

6. Shiatsu
Shiatsu is Japanese hands-on therapy that uses localized finger pressure in a rhythmical series on specific points all throughout the body. Each point is held for 2-8 seconds improving the flow of energy and helps the body to regain balance.

These are only some of the types of massage therapy you can consider trying out. Massage fills many different needs, depending on the person who seeks it. For some it may be relief from a stressful life. For others, it may mean rehabilitation or treatment of a specific illness. Either way, massage offers therapeutic and relaxing effects. If you have never experienced a massage before, then this is the time you try one. It will certainly provide you with relaxation and relief from the stress of your job and your life.

The top physical therapy specializations include cardiovascular/pulmonary, geriatric, pediatric, orthopedic and sports therapy. These are far from the only physical therapy specializations, but they are probably the most sought-after services in this field. These five specializations are listed in further detail below.

1. Cardiovascular/Pulmonary

Physical therapists that specialize in cardiovascular or pulmonary therapy are concerned with treating diseases and dysfunctions in the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. Patients suffering from CHF, COPD and post operative heart disease often come to physical therapists practicing this specialty to consult about the various exercises and treatments that they can use to increase their health. Physical therapists must complete post graduate work in this specialization before they can practice it.

2. Geriatric

There is a great demand for physical therapy from the elderly population, and this will only continue to increase as the "Baby Boomers" enter their golden years. Conditions such as cancer, COPD, diabetes, heart disease, obesity and other age-related afflictions make the physical therapy needs of the elderly very unique. There are many job opportunities in this field right now in physical therapy practices, nursing homes and assisted living centers.

3. Pediatric

As a physical therapist specializing in pediatric therapy, you would receive additional training on conditions that affect children during your graduate studies. Various conditions of the bones, muscles, organs, skin and brain affect children differently than they do adults, because their bodies are still developing. Treatment plans must not only take the condition into consideration, but the future development of the child as a result.

4. Orthopedic

Physical therapists that specialize in orthopedics are focused on the musculoskeletal system and conditions that affect joint function and muscle balance that can lead to everything from birth defects to overuse and injury to surgery. These specialized physical therapists train in biomechanics and kinesiology during their graduate studies so that they can develop treatment plans and restore their patients back to their natural, harmonious balance.

5. Sports

The sports therapy industry is booming, with more and more athletes pushing their bodies to the limits and newer technologies being developed all the time, to treat injuries and keep athletes on the top of their game. A sports physical therapist might sometimes compete with athletic trainers and sports massage specialists, but their specialized medical training gives them a unique leg up on the competition. Preventing and treating sports injuries in athletes is all in a day's work for a sports physical therapist.

Physical therapy has become an important addition to medical treatment over the last few decades. This has been facilitated by development of modern techniques which make therapy more productive and effective than in the early 20th century.

This has metamorphosed into an influential industry as the ageing population of baby boomers increases resulting onto more health demands. CNN Money in 2010 rated the medical profession as the 2nd most popular professions out of 100 and as a physical therapy assistant, you will definitely be joining this prestigious class of professionals. As such, understanding the salary becomes imperative to help you take the next step.

US BLS has reported for several years that health related professions have been the fastest growing and according to IBIS World survey of 2011, the physical therapy industry is set to grow by 5.1% annually from 2007-2017 and this highlights the opportunities that exist for anyone strategizing on joining the broad and highly prospective profession.

If you are like most people intending to join a new career, you might be wondering about a physical therapy assistant salary. There are some pertinent issues that are crucial in not only determining the salary but also the general outlook of the profession.

Assistant Roles

Physical therapy assistants (PTAs) help physical therapists to provide the necessary treatment to patients through rehabilitative activities, procedures and technologies.

The main goal in this kind of treatment is to reduce pain and increase mobility to enable patients to go about their day to day life with minimal or no physical assistance. As a physical therapy assistant, you will be working under supervision of certified therapists to provide massage, paraffin baths, electric stimulation, and traction and ultrasound treatment among other procedures recognized in the industry.

Another critical role will be in observation and recording of a patient's reaction to treatment over time and reporting the same to the therapist for further action. Additionally, you will be expected to provide education to both the family and patient about use of any appliances to help increase mobility and reduce pain. In most situations, you will work patients involved in accidents, those who suffer from neurological conditions such as cerebral palsy and arthritis among others.

An Exegesis on Physical Therapist Assistant Salary

According to the US BLS the annual median pay for a licensed physical therapist assistant is $46,683 but this is a very general way of looking t the profession in terms of pay.

This is because a lot of contingent factors determine the pay and these include training, the workplace, experience and even certification. For starters, most employers require a 2 years Associate Degree focusing on areas such as anatomy, psychology, physiology, CPR and a practical part which is the most essential in giving you hands-on experience.

Job experience is considered the most instrumental factor in determining a physical therapy assistant salary.

However, you should also ensure that any program you enroll to has accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) to ensure you get licensed to practice in your state and exams such as the National Physical Therapy Exam (NPTE) and Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy (FSBPT) are essential in getting professional licensure and thus improving your salary.

If you want better pay, you can also specialize in therapy areas such as geriatric and pediatric care, neuromuscular therapy, and musculoskeletal therapy among other areas. Such kind fields require advancement in education levels to Masters or even Doctorate again improving your value in the market.

Other factors that determine the salary include the kid of facility you work in. There are many private nursing facilities in the country and they pay higher salaries than public facilities, however, you can also opt to work in a clinic and still get better pay depending on the geographical location especially if you are offering services in affluent urban suburbs. At an entry level you will find that outpatient services are the most popular position and the pay is not very high.

Though the industry has immense benefits especially in the attractive physical therapy assistant salary, this should not be the only reason for joining the profession. You must be dexterous, detail oriented, outgoing and approachable and also possess interpersonal skills.

You should also be passionate about health care to succeed. As the BLS has indicated the profession is to grow by 45% from 2010 to 2020, there is no doubt your physical therapy assistant salary will increase and it is no brainer that this is a motivation.

A great many people regularly receive massage treatment and each person will have their own specific reasons for doing so. Some enjoy being pampered, or feeling less stressed after a hard days work. Other people seek massage treatment for the specific resolution or reduction of aches and pains. However, a great many people, even if they regularly receive massage treatment, do not really understand the benefits of regular massage and the means by which massage achieves its goals. Therefore, in this article, I aim to outline the benefits and advantages of having regular massage treatment. In addition, I describe the mechanisms by which massage therapy achieves the restoration of health from injury.

When I apply massage, I try to affect the patient on 3 levels: Structural, fluid and energy. A correctly applied massage should be an enjoyable experience that leaves the patient feeling relaxed, de-stressed and full of energy. Effective massage should be tailored to the particular needs of the patient rather than following a set routine of specific movements. Similarly, a skilled massage practitioner will use a variety of techniques and positions to target muscles and joints in the most effective way possible.

While therapists offering a basic qualification are fine for a general massage - say to relive general aches and pains, it is important to seek out a remedial massage therapist if you are require the resolution of a specific pain or injury. Generally, it is only the more highly qualified therapists that are trained to diagnose and treat specific problems and have the required training that underpins the knowledge required to identify the dysfunctional tissues and formulate an effective treatment routine.

In general a highly skilled massage therapist employs a wide range of techniques for stretching tissues, stimulating and relaxing the nervous system, lymphatic drainage, increasing circulation and breaking down knots in muscles. Furthermore a skilled therapist will usual deliver a massage face down, face up and side-lying. These positions allow the therapist to more effectively target specific muscles over just delivering a massage face down.

Massage is one of the most effective treatments for correcting and maintaining correct posture. A skilled massage therapist will be able to perform a postural analysis and determine which muscles are short and which are long. Treatment will include a full assessment of the type of work and sports that we do. From this, the massage therapist will be able to identify which muscles are likely to be over-used and need to be targeted in the massage treatment. The targeted massage routine will stretch the shortened muscles, which will help normalise posture. In addition, the massage therapist will usually suggest targeted home exercises to strengthen weakened muscles.

Sometimes, muscles are shortened due to the 'knots' that build up in the muscle fibres. A skilled massage therapist will be able to palpate these knots and apply specific focussed techniques to break them down. This will allow the muscle to perform at its optimum level as well as allow an increased blood supply to the whole muscle and promote more effective removal of waste products.

As well as the normalisation of posture, regular massage treatment encourages increased circulation in the whole body. The massage therapist usually applies long flowing massage strokes in the direction of the muscle fibres. This compresses the tissue building up a 'bow wave' of compression that is moved longitudinally along the direction of the muscle. This encourages the flow of blood through the body as well as a generic stretch of the muscle fibres and surrounding tissues. This is especially important in individuals who have relatively inactive lifestyles.

Massage therapy is a very effective treatment for dealing with injury. In the short term after the injury, the massage therapist will help to reduce the amount of pain and discomfort by reducing the inflammation around the injured area. Following this, the massage therapist can design a plan of treatment and rehabilitation to promote faster recovery and ensure that the range of motion is not lost in the injured joint while it is healing.

Thus, over time, especially with regular treatment, the massage therapist builds up a complete structural picture of the client's body. Thus the massage therapist is able to spot potential problems that may give rise to injury in the future. A great many injuries often result from immobility that builds up from injuries that have not healed properly or due to the build up of rigid tissue around a joint over time. A massage therapist is able to spot this and restore range of movement before a serious problem occurs. For sports people, this is especially important as injury is more common as athletes push their bodies to the limits of their physical design.

Therefore, a regular massage is more than just correcting structural defects. It is about maintaining health, increasing awareness of the clients body (to the client) and maintaining energy levels so that the client can perform at their optimum performance for their daily life.

A major problem with massage therapy is that it is not regulated in some countries. This means that it can be problematic in finding an effective and safe therapist. In countries where massage therapy is not regulated, the best advice I can given you is to check out the qualifications of the therapist. In addition, most therapists will be registered with one or more professional organisations and it is worth checking the registration requirements of the professional body as well.

Just as we take our cars to the garage for regular check-ups and servicing, it follows that it is prudent to do the same with our bodies. Regular massage can be thought of as a kind of check-up for our bodies - keeping our bodies in optimum health and acting as an early warning system for potential problems.

There are so many ways Massage Therapy can benefit you. A healthy body relies on the happy co-operation of the body's skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular, lymphatic, nervous, respiratory, digestive and urinary systems - and this type of bodywork benefits all of these. In addition, the tone and condition of the skin improves.

Massage affects you physically, emotionally and physiologically. It is very relaxing and helps to dissipate fatigue and muscle strain. It can also improve your immunity to disease, by increasing the white blood cells. Improved oxygenation helps the tissues to receive the nourishment they need and elimination improves, often with accompanying reduction in water retention.

Relief from headaches, anxiety and insomnia can also occur. Scar tissue is sometimes seen to reduce and regular healing bodywork can help you recover after an operation. By improving muscle tone and balance, the physical stress placed on bones and joints is improved.

If your work involves long hours of standing on hard floors, lifting heavy objects or having to sit for lengthy periods, you may end up with back pain, tense shoulders and other uncomfortable symptoms. Repetitive strain can result from remaining in the same position for unnatural amounts of time.

If your joints tend to be stiff from too much or too little exercise and you suffer from various aches and pains, regular massage could be very helpful. Massage is very useful for dancers, sports people and others who rely on their body being in tip top condition for their work.

Even babies can derive great benefit from a massage. In ancient cultures, such as in India, it was common practice to gently rub oil into an infant's limbs, to assist its health and benefit the joints and skin. Research conducted on children who had been massaged daily by their parents showed a marked increase in their health.

Some of the more difficult effects of aging can be ameliorated by good physical therapy. Sessions are often a welcome addition to the care provision in hospices, because of its deeply calming effects.

Psychological difficulties like depression can be alleviated. The beneficial effects on the body's system help to promote positive and healthy mental states, partly because of hormones (endorphins) released by the process.

The word in Arabic which means 'to knead bread' is the origin of our word 'massage.' Sessions include applying kneading movements to the muscles as well and more direct pressure to the deeper tissues.

During a session, the therapist will rub and knead muscles to dissolve the tension and soreness stored in them. Traditional strokes have names like 'effleurage' (a gentle stroking, sweeping motion), 'petrissage' which deeply kneads and squeezes the underlying muscles and 'tapotement', or 'hacking' which applies rhythmic percussive movements, using the sides of the hands, the fingertips or cupped hands which stimulate the body.

Preventative care is crucial to maintain good health. A regular physical therapy session will calm and revitalise you, so improving the function of your whole system. If you need a bit of time just to relax or need advice and help with a health problem, massage could help you in building a more naturally healthy and productive lifestyle.

The Difference of Physical Therapist training

Physical therapists are often mistaken to be massage therapists. Each has different trainings in terms of provision of care and therapy. Although both field uses touch as their primary intervention for pain and discomfort, physical therapist trainings are more centered on improving the condition of patients with previous disability or physical disorders. Special exercises and therapeutic massage treatments are the core remedy taught in physical therapist trainings. The end goal of physical therapist training is to ensure that your patient can easily return to their basic physical activities.

Sports Massage Courses

Sports can be very fun and exciting for those who love the outdoors so much. But many incidents of sports related injury and muscle strains are repeatedly encountered by many athletes while doing their sports activities. Sports massage is provided to help athletes prepare their bodies for their athletic activities, promote flexibility, reduce tension and fatigue, relieve swelling and most importantly prevent injuries. Common techniques used by massage therapists involve combinations of Swedish massage and Shiatsu which are specifically designed for professional athletes.

Sports massage courses are ideal to enhance your knowledge in body therapy. Applied anatomy, different injuries, intervention, and sports massage routines are included in sports massage courses which are very applicable to your practice as a massage therapist. Whatever field or technique of massage therapy you might want to choose, touch is still the key in providing successful massage treatments. Truly, the power of touch is powerful. Every single pain your body feels, whether physically or emotionally is eventually alleviated by just offering a tender touch and this simply shows any person that you really care.

Massage therapy in the workplace is catching on across the country. There are varied ways to incorporate this workforce and management bonus. Employers who want to go the extra mile for their workers have found that massage at work benefits all levels of employees. Your company can schedule certified massage therapists to perform on site massage for weekly, bi-weekly or monthly appointments. Hectic schedules, customer demands, as well as personal stress factors, can all adversely influence a person's work day. Maladies of all kinds have been attributed to stress. Spending much time in a chair hunched over a computer can tighten muscles in the shoulders and cause discomfort. Headache often accompanies tight muscles in the neck. Working out these stiff neck and shoulder muscles can refresh creativity and attentiveness. Massage at work helps to relieve tension and stress levels, while heightening employee morale and affording an overall feeling of employment satisfaction.

Introducing massage into your workplace invites relaxation and renewal, as well as relief from pain. While heart rate and breathing slow, blood pressure is lowered and the production of stress hormones decreases. Additionally, serotonin, a chemical that has a positive affect on emotions, is increased. Once relaxation is achieved, fatigue, anxiety and even digestive disorders are alleviated. The physical manipulation of muscles increases blood circulation, which works along side the relaxation response to culminate in enhanced distribution of oxygen and nutrients to the muscles. When muscle tissue relaxes, painful soreness and spasms cease.

Sometimes, nerves can be compressed when the muscles surrounding them contract. While nerves are supposed to transmit messages back and forth from the brain to the body, tightened muscles can impede the function of the nerves. When muscles are made to relax through massage, the nerves are able to perform optimally. Neurological pain signals to muscles, bones and nerves can be lessened, or even eliminated. Massage at work can also benefit deeper tissues by releasing tension in superficial layers of muscles as the whole body comes back into balance.

Corporate massage is taken very seriously by the people at Google. Their employees can't rave enough about how much they appreciate a little time off from a grueling day for an invigorating massage. (You can view a YouTube video, accessible from Google's site, praising the benefits of massage therapy.)

Absenteeism is very costly to any business. Colds, viruses, tension headaches, sciatica, all kinds of disease and malfunction of the body, can be attributed to stress. Massage at work may be helpful for many of the common causes that keep workers home when they are needed at their job on a regular work day. With decreases in pain and increased functioning of the employee's health, fewer sick days can be achieved through the regular use of massage therapy. Enhancement of the immune system and recovery from illness would go a long way toward justifying the implementation of massage therapy in the workplace.

It is not really clear how much relief can be expected with the occasional use of chair massage. But, there will be definite rewards that will be visible: the indulgence will offer your employee something new and unusual to break up the day and it is almost certain that you will earn the gratitude of your employee.

Employees who demonstrate maximum reliability, productivity and loyalty are those who appreciate the fact that the company they work for has employee well-being as a strong priority. Introducing massage at work as part of your employee benefits package not only creates a great working environment, but will also help establish your organization as an employer of choice which can help attract high caliber applicants whilst reducing employee turnover.

"What is in it for me?" Our human nature causes us to ask this question. Ultimately, we are concerned about our own interests. We should certainly be courteous when driving, waiting in line, or chatting on the phone.

However, we ultimately want to know how we will benefit from certain products or services. Hot stone therapy is no different. Is it helpful for therapists to use stones, and hot ones at that? In fact, hot stone massages can provide patients with a wide range of benefits. Here are some of the most significant ones:

1. Revitalizes and relaxes muscles and muscle tissue

Unfortunately, getting a hot stone massage will not give you the physique of the Incredible Hulk. However, it can revitalize muscles that are weak and unused. If you are recovering from an injury, a massage can speed up your recovery, and can improve muscles that have become weakened, due to inactivity.

In addition to reinvigorating your muscles, massages can also provide relief to "trigger points" in your muscles. By relaxing tense muscles in part of the body, you can actually benefit other regions of the body as well.

2. Improves blood circulation

While massages in general can improve your blood circulation, hot stone massages are fantastic at achieving this goal. The reason is that they use heat therapy. The therapist warms the stones to a perfect temperature, which allows them to inflate tiny blood vessels in your body. The result is that your blood circulation quickens.

3. The body releases toxins

Perspiring not only serves as the body's air-conditioner, but also allows the body to release toxins. While we often do not consider skin to be an organ, it is technically the largest organ of the human body! By using heat therapy, such as hot stone massages, the increase of the body's temperature causes perspiration to push toxins out of the skin's pores. This can have a tremendously helpful effect on your overall health, and can even be effective against some sicknesses.

4. Stress-reduction takes place

Stress is a part of everyday life. However, it is important to realize that although we cannot always eliminate the causes of stress, we can indeed change how we deal with it. Stress basically consists of those tense and worrisome feelings we have, due to problems in our lives. Hot stone massages reduce stress by allowing our bodies to relax, and increasing our bodies' blood circulation. The heat therapy from stones creates this effect.

5. Reduces pain

Our bodies sense the world, through tiny objects called sensory receptors. However, our brains tell our sensory receptors "You are feeling pain." Hot stones reduce the signals of pain from the sensory receptors, to the brain. Thus, we feel less pain.

Hot stone massages can provide an array of benefits, including the aforementioned ones. Reducing stress in our lives remains one of the most effective ways to maintain a healthy lifestyle of our hectic modern world. Hot stone massages remain one of the best ways to decrease the stress and increase the rest!

There are alternative therapies for arthritis that are becoming more popular, and if you have arthritis you might want to turn to massage to address both your pain and the stiffness of your condition and your general well-being. Maybe you haven't tried massage yet because you don't know what to expect, your not sure that massage is a good idea for your joint pain and inflammation, or maybe you don't know where to find a good massage therapist. This article will address these valid concerns and show you how massage can be an important part of your effective arthritis management.

So What is a massage? You will have a trained professional known as a massage therapist, who presses, rubs, strokes, kneads, and otherwise manipulates the muscles and soft tissues of your body. Massage is one of the oldest healing arts. The ancient Chinese, Egyptians, and Greeks are all known to have practiced it. Massage became accepted in the United States in the mid 1800's only to disappear in the following century and not revive until the 1960's and 1970's.

Today, there are well over 100,000 massage therapists at work in the United States. They practice massage in many settings, from hospitals to health clubs to private studios. People go to them for many different reasons: to ease pain, to rehabilitate from injury, to reduce stress, to ease anxiety and depression, and to improve general well-being.

While there are more than 250 varieties of massage techniques, most practitioners use one or more of a few basic methods. Many use a form of Swedish massage, which employs long, flowing strokes meant to be calming and relaxing. As your body becomes relaxed, the massage therapist can also apply focused pressure to relieve areas of muscular tension. Other popular forms of massage include deep tissue massage, which features strong pressure on deeper layers of tissue, and myofascial release, in which long, stretching strokes releases the tension in the fascia (the connective tissue around the muscles). There are also the Asian techniques of acupressure and shiatsu, which use finger pressure on specific points on the body, and the technique called reflexology, which upholds that rubbing certain points on the feet, hands, or ears has a positive effect on various body parts.

What are the benefits of massage? If you have a chronic condition, massage can have numerous benefits. If done correctly, massage can provide a wonderful break from the stress of living with arthritis or another stressful condition. It can aid in relaxation, which by itself helps healing and reduces es stress. It can also reduce pain, improve joint movement, relax tense muscles, and stimulate blood flow. But, massage for those of you who have arthritis should be handled as a complementary therapy, that is, one that is used in combination with, and not to replace, other regular medical treatments such as pain medicine or physical therapy. Listed below you will find five ways that massage can benefit you, even if you don't have arthritis.

One is relaxation. The best and probably the biggest benefit is relaxation, that's number one. Massage should bring a sense of well-being to the body. Mary Kathleen Rose is a certified massage therapist in Colorado and after 25 years of experience, and much of that working with those with chronic conditions, she has developed a style of massage she calls Comfort Touch that is characterized by slow, broad, and surrounding pressure. It's not known exactly why or how massage encourages relaxation. Some speculate that massage triggers the body's parasympathetic nervous system, (which supports the body's restorative processes), muscle tension is improved, the heart rate slows, and the fight-or-flight response is revered.

Your circulation changes. While the mechanism is not well understood, massage is also thought to encourage the flow of lymph in the body. (Lymph is a fluid that circulates throughout the body; the cells in lymph help fight infection and disease.) Massage can also increase the flow of blood. However, exercise actually has a greater effect on increasing circulation than massage does. And during a relaxing massage, local circulation may increase, but systemic circulation actually slows down, as evidenced by lowered blood pressure, lower body temperature, and slower breathing. This may explains why many people actually become cooler during massage.

You'll get pain relief. There is some evidence that massage can actually relieve pain. Those who are getting massages certainly think it does. There was a study done by the American Massage Therapy Association that showed 93% of the people who tried a massage, felt it was effective for their pain relief and there are many theories out there for why a massage relieves pain. But, there are some researchers who speculate that massage encourages the release of pain-relieving hormones or that massage may block pain signals that are sent to the brain.

You'll have improved joint movement. Through the use of direct pressure, massage can affect the muscles and connective tissues in the body, increasing mobility. This can help increase the range of motion in the joints and lesson stiffness in the muscles, tendons and ligaments for those who have arthritis.

There are also psychological benefits. The psychological benefits from massages are well documented. Massage can change your mood, alleviate any anxiety and depression you may have, and improve your feelings of well-being and safety and this is why so many people will turn to massage.

How do you choose the right massage therapist? Before you go looking for a massage therapist, you should talk to your doctor about whether or not it's a good idea for you. If you have certain conditions, such as dermatomyositis or severe osteoporosis (the thinning of your bones), your doctor may advise you not to try massages. Once you have the go ahead from your doctor, you can start looking for a massage therapist, but you will want to make sure that they have the necessary education and licensing. It might be a good idea to find one who has worked with people with arthritis and who you're comfortable with. The person you choose should be someone you feel safe with, safe enough to tell them your needs and what you prefer. Please, don't be afraid to give feedback if something doesn't feel right or is uncomfortable or causes pain. A good massage therapist will ask you questions about your current medical conditions, if you're experiencing a flare-up, or about the severity and frequency of your symptoms, such as your pain or your level of functionality.

You will want to avoid the therapist who makes claims suggesting that massage will fix or cure your arthritis, and you can seek either a male or female massage therapist. For some, it makes no difference whether the therapist is male or female.

Be sure that your massage therapist is trained properly and is certified. The golden standard for certification is the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork (NCBTMB). In order to be certified by the NCBTMB, a massage therapist has to have had at least 500 hours of instruction and have passed a national exam. The majority of states require that massage therapists be licensed in the state before they practice and state licenses may be even more difficult to get than the NCBTMB licenses and usually have to be renewed every couple of years. You may want to also investigate whether the training program your massage therapist attended is accredited by the Commission on Massage Therapy Accreditation (COMTA).

Here is a list of sources that can help you find a massage therapist:

Integrative medicine centers, especially those affiliated with academic centers or hospitals;

Referrals from friends, particularly any whose condition is similar to yours;

Senior centers, which usually have a network of practitioners, including massage therapists, who can make house calls.

It doesn't matter who you massage therapist is or what type of massage you are getting, the massage shouldn't hurt. Those of you who have arthritis are already in pain and you don't need more. So, before you have a massage it's important to think about whether any of the following suggestions apply to you.

Your therapist should avoid places that are very painful or that have limited function, that means you will have to let your massage therapist know what your present condition is before the massage and continually let him know how you're feeling during the massage. Your therapist should also avoid any techniques such as deep tissue work that might aggravate those painful areas. In most cases if there is arthritis in a specific joint, it's best to just avoid direct, deep pressure. Your therapist should also use a broad, full-hand contact pressure instead of the gliding and kneading strokes of the classic Swedish massage.

The next thing is to avoid any uncomfortable positions. If you have arthritis of the neck, you will not want to be face down, instead you will want to lie down with your face up or on your side with a pillow under your head. Now, if you are having trouble climbing up on the table, the therapist can lower the table or provide a stool to help you climb up. There are even some massage therapists who will come to your home so that the massage can be tailored to your own special situation.

Special considerations for Osteoarthritis (OA) or Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA).

If you have osteoarthritis (OA), make sure the massage therapist avoids direct contact on the areas of pain, the affected joints, themselves. Using gentle and broad pressure to muscles surrounding the joints can bring relief. For those with rheumatoid arthritis, they should avoid all direct pressure on the areas of pain or inflammation. There is a technique that uses slower movements that can bring relief to the areas of the tension surrounding the affected areas.

Also, the simple holding of an area while letting the warmth from the therapists hands penetrate the tissues, can be very soothing and the gentle moving of your arm can help encourage local circulation of blood and lymph and promote greater mobility.

When should you cancel your appointment with the massage therapist? If you're having a flare-up, it would probably be a good idea to avoid a massage. When you get to know how you'll respond to touch, you'll get a better idea of when it's the right or the wrong time to get a message.

This is what you can expect during your visit to the massage therapist. You should have already discussed your medical condition with your therapist before you made your appointment, but your therapist should still ask you about any special areas of concern just before the session. If this is your first time, let the massage therapist know that you've never had a massage before and that you're nervous. Talk to the therapist and tell him exactly what you want out of the session, and discuss what part of your body needs the most attention. A typical full body massage includes the back, arms, legs, feet, hands, head, neck, and shoulders, but you can also exclude any of these, or maybe you want him or her to concentrate on a certain area.

The average cost of a massage can vary widely, ranging from $30 to $120 and up per hour. Check with your insurance provider to see if they pay for a massage because a lot of times when it's ordered by your doctor there is a good chance your insurance will pay for it. A full-body massage usually last for about an hour or you can get a half-hour partial-body massage or you may want to get just a 20 or 30 minute session to see how your body responds.

Usually massages are done while you're lying down on a table but they can be customized to your own situation, and they are usually done with oil, but they don't have to be done that way. You might have a reaction to the scented oils the therapist uses so you may want to ask the therapist to use an unscented lotion instead of the oil, especially for the areas that have inflammation. Another thing, most massages are done without clothes, but if you're not comfortable taking your clothes off the practitioner will leave the room while you undress and get yourself on the table, that will be covered with a clean sheet. You should be covered up at all times to keep yourself warm and comfortable with the area being worked on the only thing that is uncovered.

You can give yourself a massage, but it isn't as relaxing. There are self-massaging techniques that can help ease your pain and tension but it isn't nearly as relaxing as the traditional massage. Your hands, arms, legs and feet are good, easy-to-reach areas that can benefit from self-massage. But, remember to avoid those inflamed joints, your therapist can show you some techniques that are unique to your situation. Here is a list of just a few more general suggestions for self-massage:

Place one hand on a joint in your leg, and use your other hand to press down on the hand that is on your leg. This strategy uses the hand's warmth to penetrate the joint.

Knead a spot for a short time, 15 to 20 seconds is often sufficient. Grasp the muscle area between your palm or thumb and your fingers. Lift it slightly and squeeze as if you were kneading dough. Work into the muscle with slow, regular squeeze-and-release motions.

Cup your hand over a tense muscle. Glide your hand firmly over the length of the muscle in slow repeated movements. Apply various amounts of pressure to find what feels best.

Sometimes students who even do this, still find it challenging to pass the national certification exam.

If you live in a state where the MBLEx is accepted, I would jump all over that. Most states do accept the MBLEx exam and offer it to all massage therapy student graduates. I have found that thousands of future massage therapists prefer the MBLEx hands down over any other exam. The MBLEx is and can be and overwhelming exam and an exam you will not pass if you think you can just take it without any preparation. Its a 200 question test that cost about $200.00. Many people fail this test and cause themselves a lot of needless expense, grief, and a feeling that is not very good for this kind of profession. I highly recommend that you get some kind of study guide, tutor book, online study practice exam, or anything else that will help you pass the national certification exam.

I have been a massage therapist and instructor for many years and have found future massage therapist simply have to prepare to pass any massage exam whether it be the NCETMB, NCETM, or the MBLEx. Please check your state massage therapy board to see what exam they will accept. Again, I highly recommend taking the MBLEx if your state offers this exam. On the day of the exam, be well rested, use good rationale when reading a question, eliminate right away the wrong answers in your mind and go with your gut feeling on questions that your are unsure of the answer. Again, if your prepared correctly, you will not have any problem passing the exam or any massage therapy exam. The massage certification exam in taken on a computer, and is a multiple choice exam. Like I said, there are many good study guides and I highly would use one for preparation. I have guided many successful massage therapists to use an online study guide that has practice exams that helps prepare you, as well as gives you the computer online feel where you will fill comfortable using a computer on the day of the exam.
